The event was a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee as well as San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris, a candidate for California attorney general.
Along Alameda de las Pulgas, the presidential motorcade encountered onlookers and dozens of protestors, holding signs such as "GET EQUAL: Repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and "The Obamanator kills Jobs, kills prosperity, kills hopes."
The Atherton event followed a meeting of the president with Apple CEO Steve Jobs at the Westin hotel near San Francisco International Airport, and preceded a fundraising dinner in Palo Alto that night at the home of Google executive Marissa Mayer.
About 50 people attended each event, with the price of admission at up to $30,400 per person. The events were expected to raise about $1.8 million for the Democratic National Committee.
