The junior just learned he is one of 32 American high school musicians invited to spend a week in Los Angeles, performing and recording with his peers and getting to know Grammy artists.
The Grammy Foundation sponsors the camp and jazz session that includes the students going to the show on Feb. 10, and then playing at the Grammy after-party.
Babe Ruth tryouts
Jan. 19 is the deadline to register for tryouts for the upcoming Palo Alto Babe Ruth baseball season. Tryouts will be held Jan. 19 and 27, depending on the weather.
Residents of Menlo Park, Atherton, Woodside, Portola Valley and East Palo Alto, as well as Palo Alto, are eligible. Players must be 13, but not older than 15, by May 1. There are two leagues: Prep for 13-year-olds and 15U for 14- and 15-year-olds. Both leagues play a short busy season, culminating in a championship tournament.

Katherine Killmond of Atherton, a senior at Notre Dame High School in Belmont, has been named a Commended Student in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.
She is among the top 50,000 of more than 1.5 million students who entered the national Merit Program by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholship Qualifying Test.
New spa director at Rosewood Sand Hill
Laura Krohn is the new director of the Sense spa at Rosewood Sand Hill in Menlo Park. Prior to joining Rosewood, Ms. Krohn was the spa and programming director at the Ventana Inn & Spa in Big Sur.
Ms. Krohn's previous experience includes developing the spa program at the Fairmont Kea Lani resort in Maui in 2004. She then moved to San Francisco, where she managed the Red Door Spa and, later, Remede Spa at the St. Regis Hotel. She has also served as the national spa education manager for Bare Escentuals cosmetic company.
Ms. Krohn has a master's degree in public health and a bachelor's degree in nutrition, both from San Jose State University. She is a certified massage therapist, personal trainer and lifestyle counselor.
Whitfield joins Morgan Stanley
Garry Whitfield of the Whitfield Group has joined the wealth management office of Morgan Stanley, at 2775 Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park, as a senior vice president and financial adviser.
Formerly with JP Morgan Private Bank for three years, Mr. Whitfield holds a master's degree from San Jose State University and a bachelor's degree from Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. A native of Chattanooga, he lives in Monte Sereno with his family.
