At Kepler's: Patricia Polacco

Picture-book author and illustrator Patricia Polacco will discuss her new book, "The Blessing Cup," at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at Kepler's Books, 1010 El Camino Real in Menlo Park.

The book tells the story of Anna, a young Russian Jewish girl in the early 1900s. She and her family, who lived in fear of the Czar's soldiers, had a hard life and few possessions. Their treasure was a beautiful china tea set.

When her family leaves Russia for America, they bring the tea set and its blessings. The book is a prequel and companion to the bestseller, "The Keeping Quilt."

Ms. Polacco, author and illustrator of many books for children, struggled in school because she couldn't read until she was 14 due to dyslexia. She says she found relief through her art. She didn't start writing books until she was 41.
