Mr. Wert died April 25 surrounded by his family at his Woodside home that he designed and built. He was 61.
Mr. Wert graduated from Santa Clara University with a bachelor's degree in business and had a 30-year career as a general contractor on the Peninsula.
He developed a passion for radio-controlled model helicopters and devoted himself to it after retiring in 2009. He founded Starwood Scale Models and had customers "around the world," the family said. "He touched the lives of hundreds of fellow helicopter enthusiasts."
Mr. Wert is survived by his wife, Laura Reed; son Eric Wert; daughter Hilary Wert; brother Peter Wert of San Rafael; and sister Amy Johnson of Woodinville, Washington.
The family prefers memorial donations to the Peninsula Humane Society, the Nature Conservancy, or Habitat for Humanity.
