Nominations sought for Atherton tree awards

Are you awestruck by your neighbor's oak, or impressed by her cypress? Or perhaps you're especially proud of the magnolia soulangeana you've lavished care on for years, with such visually rewarding results.

Atherton residents have until the end of September to nominate trees about town for an award sponsored by the town's Tree Committee.

As in past years, the committee will give awards to individual trees nominated by residents, and for the first time will also recognize builders who have done a "superior job of protecting trees on specific construction sites," according to an announcement from the committee.

Nominations for the latter award are not required, but suggestions are accepted.

For the individual tree awards, the committee says that eligible trees are of any species that meet one or more of the following criteria: outstanding specimen; unique in size, age, or species; or historical significance.

Awards may also be given for the best-preserved tree, and the best newly planted tree.

Nomination forms are available at the town administrative office at 91 Ashfield Road in the Town Center. Or go to athertontree.org and click on Tree Awards in the left-hand column.
