Additional budget cuts include a hiring freeze; elimination of most participation in scientific conferences; and non-critical training. The USGS is also reviewing contracts and grants, and may furlough employees for an undetermined amount of time.
The lecture series began in 1990 and has only been canceled twice before, in September 2001, immediately after the terrorist attacks, and in November 1995 when the federal government shut down and employees were furloughed, Mr. Pressfield said.
The future of the lecture series is not clear.
