Briefs: Red Cross seeks nominees for hero awards

Each year the American Red Cross honors local heroes nominated by the community. The deadline to make nominations for this year's May 29 event for San Mateo County is Jan. 31.

The Bay Area Chapter is looking for people who have shown courage, dedication and character through acts of heroism and kindness in several categories including: lifesaving hero (adult and youth who used skills such as CPR or first aid to save a life); act of courage hero; act of kindness and philanthropy hero; community service hero (individual and organization); and animal rescue hero.

Nominees must work or reside in San Mateo County and have performed their heroic action in 2013.

Woodside preschool registration opens

Woodside Elementary School District will accept applications for fall preschool classes beginning Feb.1. Parents are invited to visit the preschool for an open house from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31 (adults only).

The preschool is a half-day, fee-based program that runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Children must be at least 2 years, 7 months old as of Sept. 1 to attend.

Priority is given to children living within the Woodside School District boundaries. Applications will be available for pickup at the school office or to download online Feb.1
