Original post made by Joe, Menlo Park: Park Forest, on Jan 3, 2008

There was another two vehicle accident at Watkins abd El Camino at 4pm Thursday afternoon 1/3/2008. What kind of traffic mitigation has MP come up with for the Acorn project discusion this coming Tues Jan 8 at the city council meeting?

I sure hope, at a minimum, that the parking be made adequate (not reduced from the regular requirement). I also hope there be consideration of a light at the corner.
Apparently, the environmental report attempts to justify lower parking because other business areas have lower requirements, but that's like making apples into oranges just because they're both fruits! The conditions along El Camino matter, and the conditions around this location matter.

I told you so.

When is enough, enough?

Don't just do something, stand there!

OK,OK, that's not helpful. But, as Joanna says, no left turns. No parking on east side of ECR from Encinal north. Actually, it's Atherton and Caltrans' problem; nonetheless, we Menlo Parkers certainly need to take a clear and forthright position to mitigate this clear and present danger.

The only mitigation that will really help is one that will generate better drivers. There are too many people on our roads today who have no business being behind the wheel of a vehicle with the destructive ability of a car. It is unreasonable to expect traffic engineers to design facilities that can safely be used by complete incompetents. We should leave driving to professionals like bus drivers and get all the ameteurs off the road. That would greatly improve safety!

I can see no left turns from WB Watkins to SB El Camion Real. But lets be serious here, the main reason for the accidents are poor drivers and drivers without drivers licenses. They don't have a license for a reason. Either poor drivers and it has been taken away or can not get one for one reason or another.

Until ALL lawful citizens start demanding that any unlicensed or suspended licensed driver have their car towed (which the law currently provides for) we will have an "accident looking for a place to happen".

Have you called your local police department to see what their policy on the subject is? You might be surprised. Bottom line, it is the drivers, in a hurry, not paying attention or just poor driving habits that cause the accidents.

My last word is if you do not have uninsured motorist you are rolling the dice.

I wish the Acorn was still around. Sad. I loved that place.
