Why deleted isn't really deleted--

Original post made by TechPaul, Menlo Park: Downtown, on May 6, 2008

I don't know how long it was that I worked and played on computers before I truly understood that when I erased a Word document from my My Documents folder it was not gone forever.

On the flip side, if you overwrite an accidentally deleted (i.e recycle bin flushed) file, it's probably gone forever. I've noticed that this happens quite often when there are many files with similar file names...eg my friend deleted his entire album of vacation photos recently, mistaking it for another folder.

So, it becomes necessary to be able to retrieve those files without breaking the bank. Periodic backups are an essential but not the sole solution. It is also necessary to have file recovery software already installed to enable quick and painless retrieval of those files, rather than searching for emergency solutions after an incident. A good data protection plan is essential for safeguarding important data/files and it's importance cannot be over-stressed.

VanHeusen is absolutely correct.

If you have not already installed a undelete program, you should do so before you need it. A good free one is Pandora Recovery

If you need to undelete a file, and don't have an undelete installed, do NOT download and install one-- doing so may very well overwrite the file you're trying to recover! Instead, use an online undelete tool such as Softperfect File Recovery.
