Menlo council members' travel expenses vary widely, with mayor topping the list

Original post made on Feb 24, 2014

I was wondering why the amount of money the Mayor spends is up for discussion and on display? I would think that the Mayor like anyone else has to report and explain to her bosses not the entire town. I think this type of forum is very demeaning and really should not be allowed for public discussion.
Similarly, I have seen articles/emails that were written because someone over heard a conversation during lunch at a local establishment. Personally, I do not believe this type of behavior is acceptable. In Menlo they congratulate\applaud the person who eavesdropped. I don't know who allows this very immature behavior to continue, but frankly I am embarrassed by it as a resident.
It would be nice if anyone would notice that Our Street lights are not set like all the surrounding city's. Anywhere I drive, Palo Alto or Redwood City, late in the evening the stop lights change more frequently because there is less traffic. Not in Menlo Park. I can't tell you how many times I have sat at the intersection of El Camino and Ravenswood waiting a good five minutes before I can make a left hand turn. I believe it is the same at Middle and El Camino. Why hasn't this feature been updated in Menlo Park?

Stephanie:

the amount of money the mayor spends is up for display and public discussion because he is an elected official. He works for us. WE are his employers and have a right to know how he is spending money.

The citizens of Menlo Park ARE the Mayor's bosses and this type of reporting is not only appropriate but necessary. If you have any doubts just Google City of Bell, Ca. scandal.
