Routine food at new hamburger joint
The Local Dish, posted by Dave, a resident of another community, on Dec 10, 2007 at 2:02 pm

In an echo of the bland and character-less stainless steel equipment behind the counter at Jeffrey's Hamburgers, the food -- by which I mean the Polish dogs -- is equally without character.

What is a Polish dog? It is evidently not a Polish sausage. Aside from being made of meat, it's one other dimension is an unimaginative unidimensional hotness. The sweet relish is curiously bland, the brown mustard amazingly has no bite, and the bun is a white-bread artifact from the 1950s.

After a look behind the counter at the cooking area, I am left to wonder what it takes for a short order cook to be allowed to be expressive rather than orthodox. It seems a simple assembly line with a set collection of ingredients that have no room for creativity.

I'm looking in the wrong place for a good Polish sausage. The ball park at the San Jose Giants or Rossotti's in Portola Valley are without local peers.

Jeffrey's = Overpriced Burgers

Max's: Same large price, but worth it.

In-n-Out: Better and (much) cheaper.

We too have sampled Jeffery's - the setting is nice but VERY noisy - the burgers are very much like those at Brix up the street, but much more expensive.

I like Jeffrey's. I like the style of the place and the food. My kids like the food too when we get the rare time to eat out. It is nice to have a new diner restaurant in town. Pretty sad listening to folks who most likely are living in multi-million dollar homes whining about the price of a burger.

My complaint isn't about prices, it's about taste and imagination in setting up a menu.

Why would a restauranteur go with a tasteless "Polish dog" and a bun that contributes almost nothing beyond holding the aforesaid dog when real and tasty Polish sausages are out there? What is behind that choice? Is it because that's what the supplier has? Is it a formula that the owner swears by? What does it say about the rest of the menu?

I have limited dollars for eating at restaurants, and I like my sinful food to actually taste sinfully good. I already knew that In and Out is great for burgers and that Rossotti's is great for Polish Sausage. Now I know that Jeffrey's is not with respect to the latter and that it costs more. I've had my last meal there.

Jeffery's is better than the recently departed Brix.

Best Burger in my book is Old Pro downtown Palo Alto.

The Stanford Park hotel used to be my first choice for a burger, but something changed about 3 years ago.

We LOVE Jeffries! We visit the original in San Mateo often and were thrilled to learn of the new one in Menlo Park. Best shakes, burgers and onion rings I think. The chili is a treat too. It's Great to have a simple place to go with the family.

THANKS JEFFRIES For expanding to another neighborhood for families to enjoy!
