Editorial: Church and state in Menlo Park
Around Town, posted by Editor, The Almanac Online, on Jan 30, 2008 at 5:26 pm

A guest opinion on these pages last week suggesting that the city of Menlo Park was violating the separation of church and state by renting the City Council chambers to the Christian Science Church has set off a flood of discussion on the Almanac's Web site.

Thank you, Almanac, for this wonderful editorial. Those who have not seen Mr. and Mrs Engel's letter posted on Town Square Jan.22/08, should do so.

Using language designed to manipulate, it misrepresents the First Amendment "establishment" clause. As a result many people were fooled into thinking that church organizations should be barred from their lawful use of city facilities.

The issue of religion is so emotionally charged that people were ready and willing to trample on freedom of speech for an imagined violation.

I hope that our citizens learn from this incident and are much more careful in the future. Our rights and freedoms depend on it.

Thank you, editors of the Almanac, for your uncommon, common sense! The city's current policy of nondiscrimination is definitely the only option.

Well done Almanac! Would you please keep us posted on any developments? Will this issue be discussed at a future City Council meeting? Thanks.
