A legend in his own mind
Atherton, posted by arlan kranz, a resident of the Atherton: West of Alameda neighborhood, on Oct 17, 2009 at 9:20 am

With all of his experience in corporate finance, one would have thought Mayor Jerry Carlson would have figured out by now how the Town could live without the parcel tax.

If Jerry Carlson can't find a way to have the Town live within its means, perhaps it is time to show Mr. Carlson the door.

I had hoped Jerry Carlson would join with McKeithen and Dobbie to usher in a new era of transparency and accountability in Atherton Town government.

Mayor Carlson has failed to meet my expectations. For that reason I will be voting no on the parcel tax.

One thing is fairly clear from perusing the council minutes: raises are in the works for town manager Jerry Gruber and the police, but the council is waiting until after the parcel tax vote to enact/publicize them. Last week Citigroup had to sell its most profitable unit just because of the spectacle of paying a large bonus to the unit's top trader. It would be a simliar public relations nightmare to ask residents to pay a new parcel tax in the midst of giving raises to these employees in an economic downturn with zero inflation. Last week it was also announced since the cost of living didn't increase in the past year, there would be no social security increase. Why then should the Atherton employees be getting a raise???

When Jerry Carlson interviewed for City Council he said it was not his intention to run again. Then he took out papers to do just that at the first opportunity.

When his ally on the Council was subject to a recall campaign, he sat silent.

When he was on the finance committee, he promised us he would find a way to save enough money so the Town would no longer have to beg the voters for a parcel tax.

Jerry Carlson now sits with the rest of the council voting in secret for City staff raises to be anounced right after the passage of the parcel tax.

Jerry Carlson gives politicians a bad name.
