Get some sleep!

Original post made on Jan 28, 2010

Research shows high school students need 9 to 10 hours of sleep to be alert and effective. Many aren't getting near that. The local high school district may delay the start of classes to enable students to get more sleep. ==I Photo by Michelle Le/The Almanac.==

This is not a new study, but it has been ignored by schools that seem more concerned with after-school sports. The primary goal of a school should be academic education. Tired students don't learn.

Unfortunately, many students don't care if they learn anything in first period. They are more focused on getting out early enough for fun activities. They're kids, so who can blame their short-sightedness. But adults, teachers especially, should know better.

The students' academic needs should come first.

I wish this had been around when I was still in school. When I went to Woodside, class started at 8 a.m. I left the house at 7:30 a.m. and I was chronically exhausted. I passed up several activities because they met before school started.

Sleep deprivation has been linked to depression and a host of other ailments. Teens have different sleep needs than adults, and different circadian rhythms. It's about time this was recognized and acted upon.

God bless you for realizing that proper sleep is one of the most important elements to help a growing mind and body! Indeed us adults could use more too. We'd be less cranky. Go to sleep not to war!
