Host Menlo-Atherton took advantage of nine walks, two costly third-inning errors, and a complete game by starting pitcher Nils Gilbertson to defeat Aragon 10-3 on Friday afternoon, finishing a two-game sweep of the Dons. The victory improved M-A's PAL Bay Division record to 7-1, ensuring that the Bears would at least remain tied for the league lead. Menlo-Atherton has now won 11 of its last 14 games, and is 13-7 overall.
Gilbertson scattered 10 hits, stuck out two, and walked just one Aragon batter to improve his season record to 6-1. After allowing three runs (two earned) in the first inning, Gilbertson cruised the rest of the way, never exceeding 10 pitches in any inning. He needed just 86 pitches to notch his complete-game victory.
M-A's offense was paced by junior left fielder Chace Warren, who homered, doubled, and drove in four runs. Catcher Jeff Keller scored three runs (1 RBI) for the Bears, while DH Louis McCabe slapped two singles and drove in a run. Casey Eason, Kyle Zirbes, and Patrick Moriarty also registered RBIs for M-A.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the third, M-A scored four times off Aragon starter Trevor McNeil following three walks, two Don errors, and just one hit. The Bears extended their lead to 5-3 in the fourth, thanks to a McCabe single, a walk, a perfect sacrifice bunt by Andy Brodbeck, and an RBI sacrifice fly by Eason.
M-A put the game away in the fifth, scoring three more runs following two walks, an RBI double by Warren, an RBI single by McCabe, and an RBI sacrifice fly to deep center by Moriarty.
Warren blasted his first career homer to right-center in the sixth, driving in Keller, who had singled sharply to left earlier in the inning.
Menlo-Atherton returns to action on Wednesday with an important PAL Bay Division contest at Terra Nova.
