Why are most of these things calendar listings?
Around Town, posted by Confused, a resident of the Menlo Park: Downtown neighborhood, on Apr 3, 2007 at 11:45 am

I'm confused. I thought this was a place to talk about things, not list calendar events. The first three items (now the second, third and fourth item) are calendar listings things, not people talking about things and reporting on things. Isn't that what you calendar section is for?.

Just wondering.

Confused, I was hoping you'd bring up an interesting topic so that a new discussion could be launched, and we'd get a reprieve from the long list of calendar items. So why did you stop short of giving us something to chew on? Read any good books lately? Seen any good movies? Care to comment on the congressional hearings on Alberto Gonzalves's firings of the 8 U.S. attorneys? How about our government's torture of prisoners? Let's get some discussion going.

Eugene Robinson has a chilling column in this morning's Chronicle about U.S.-sponsored torture -- a topic I hear shockingly little discussion about. The American public seems complacent about this horrific practice our own government is involved in, a practice we as a people have ALWAYS condemned in the past. What's happened to us?

Here's the column:

I think its OK to include information about an event - the calendar listings are pretty short and good for an overview - but if someone has the time and energy to add interest to these pages by writing about an event why not?

If people want to discuss serious issues that's fine too! Its not as though we have zillions of writers on these pages!
