There are a lot of facts about the complex reasons for the garbage rate increases that the public isn't aware of. This editorial points out some of them. Angry fingers should be pointed at Allied Waste, a corrupt company. Also, for many years, elected officials didn't gradually raise rates as expenses for services and landfills increased. So now there's a catch-up jump. Rates for the new, convenient and efficient services are now in line with those throughout the Bay Area (fact). When local landfills close in about 10 years, rates to transport garbage hundreds of miles away will increase again (fact). Why fill up our landfills faster than necessary? Managing our resources efficiently, through waste reduction and recycling, is the only smart thing to do (fact!).
