MA Bears Lose to El Camino
Sports, posted by Linda Lange, a member of the Menlo-Atherton High School community, on Mar 30, 2011 at 8:52 pm

The MA Varsity baseball team stumbles at El Camino as starting pitcher J Eclavea threw a 4 hit complete game win with a score of 5-1 on Wednesday March 29th. The Bears scored first in the top of the 5th inning when Chase Warren muscled a single to right, advanced to second on a sac bunt by Michael Abramson and on to third on a single by Isaac Block setting up a first and third situation. The next play went down perfectly as Block bolted to second drawing a throw. He stopped to get into a run down giving Chace a chance to score from third, reaching second himself when Chase drew a late throw. That was unfortunately was the extent of the scoring for the Bears.

Nick Lange, the Bears starting pitcher, threw scoreless baseball for the first 4 innings giving up only 4 hits until the 5th inning, when in response to the Bears scored run in the top of the 5th, El Camino surged back with 2 hits and 2 walks to score their first run and knock Lange out of the game with the bases loaded. Reliever Ryan Cortez could not turn the tide facing 4 batters without an out. It was left to senior Kyle Zirbes to come in and close the door facing only 7 batters in the 5th and 6th striking out 3 and getting the 6 outs needed to end the game.

Deserving special mention, Miles Brewer, the Bears left fielder, made an impressive diving catch to rob El Camino of an extra base hit. Alex Aguiar played his first game on varsity hitting 2 fly balls to the outfield, reaching on an error, and playing third base.

The Bears are 5-4 overall and 1-2 in league play.
