For decades, Ladera has been home to a women's medical clinic on Alpine Road just east of the Ladera Community Church. But come the fall, when the lease expires, the Portola Valley Women's Health Center at 3250 Alpine Road will shut its doors for good.

This is such sad news! The PVWHC is such a wonderful clinic. We found it through a friend - an emergency nurse at Stanford - who highly recommended the place. I was fortunate to have Drs Perlman, McCarrick and Aung take care of me throughout my pregnancies. The nurses, sonogram technician, lab technician and administrative staff were also very friendly, attentive and responsive.
Even though I live around the corner from the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, I preferred going to the PVWHC because of the personalized attention.
So glad to have had the experience - so sad to see the center close. I thank the entire staff for taking such good care of me and wish them all the best.

Dear Almanac,
Just a note to clarify, please. Women's Health Medical Group was started by me and Candace Weinstein in 1984. We practiced together and added physicians and nurse midwives as we grew. We moved to the Portola Valley site in late 1992. I left at the end of 1993 because I wanted to limit my practice to gynecology and have more time to spend with my young children.
Another clarification for your article. The first woman to start her own clinic in this area was Nancy Mason. She started her own practice in Palo Alto in 1981 and has been in practice now for 30 years.
