Portola Valley residents and drivers passing through town may, in coming months, experience a new presence on the side of the road: a deputy sheriff on a motorcycle. The Town Council discussed this and other matters in a review of the proposed budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year, which begins July 1.

Wow. $480,000 for one deputy and one car. Is that 3 shifts of 8 hours each? What is the salary of a deputy? The cost of a car might be $30-35,000. That would make it $150,000 per shift per deputy.

The numbers are inexact, including numbers used in this Almanac story, but in a phone interview, Lt. Larry Schumaker of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office itemized the annual cost of two extra deputies (two for each full week's daytime shift) at around $450,000 for the 2010-11 fiscal year.
