Today: Changes to child safety law announced

If your child is under 8 years old or shorter than 4'9", California's child safety law now requires a backseat child restraint for car trips. Failure to comply can rack up a $500 fine and a point against your driving record.

Any news about under 12 being required to ride in the back seat?

I'm really tired of this car seat nanny state. When are they going to stop raising the limits?

I understand all the reasons, and I have no objection to these rules as recommendations. But by making this into laws with fines they aren't thinking of the unintended consequences:

- We all have to buy minivans or SUVs in order to have enough room for all the car seats. How much extra gas has been burned due to car seat laws?

- I can't give all the kids a ride home from school in carpool in my car

- Am I supposed to hold a 4'9" stick up against kids like at amusement parks before allowing them in my car?
