Today: Atherton meets on ballot language
Atherton, posted by Editor, The Almanac Online, on Jul 24, 2012 at 4:44 pm

The Atherton City Council will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, to approve language for three measures on the November ballot that involve building a library and Little League facilities in the park and rebuilding Town Center.

The proposed ballot language for the library measure is: "Should the town of Atherton construct a new library in Holbrook-Palmer Park using funds dedicated for library purposes only, and not using any existing park open space for this purpose?"

There is confusion on what the words: "Open Space" represent: to most they mean space that is open; however it is possible the current plan to put the library in the park does not count the large patio next to the main house as open space.

What size library is being proposed?

Is this really happening? What percentage of the park is the covered patio? Some fraction of a fraction of a percent? Open space is commonly understood as space not currently occupied by a structure. Does anyone really believe someone's opinion of whether or not they want the library in the park would rise or fall based on whether the square footage would include the patio?

And Mr. Marsala, I thought you had sold your home and left Atherton. Why do you continue to harangue us?

MOTION by McKeithen, second by Widmer to accept staff recommendations with revisions to recommendation #1 to add “including enclosed walls” to end of the first sentence.

1. That the new library site is limited to the existing Main House footprint and its associated hardscape areas as shown on Attachment 1 and that the building footprint will not exceed 10,000 square feet. Although the available site is greater than 10,000 square feet as shown on Attachment 1, the library footprint will be less that the available site area and will not exceed 10,000 square feet.

They mean that they will put the library where the tennis court are currently, and eliminate the courts (of course, they are not telling us this).
