My understanding is each Public School in Atherton Could get 1 million dollars if we can convince City Council

Original post made by Colleen Anderson on Aug 6, 2012

The library fund is about 7-8 million dollars. What if we took 2-3 million to remodel & retrofit the current library. Then took the other 5 million and gave it to our public school libraries. At this moment in time it is my understanding that this could be an option. Selby Lane, Las Lomitas, MA, Encinal, and any other public schools I might have missed. I just got off the phone with the principle of one of the schools, and she said that would be a miracle. Anyone have any input on this. Anyone want to help with this idea.

I think that is the way to go! Each school could then use that money to improve the education based on the needs of their students. For example, having a row of up-to-date computers in the library to look items up, reference books, iPads to check out, type-to-learn and language software to check out etc etc.

Cary Weist brought this idea to my attention. Apparently Jerry Carlson brought up this idea, but it was shot down. It is my understanding after speaking with a couple of people this can be done. We are getting the schools and parents involved on this project. I am not doing this along. A number of people have come forward to help.
If they pass building the library in the park all of the money the schools could use would be gone.

Better hurry, as the Library Joint Powers Board wants to hold Atherton's $5 million in donor funds. There's a reason for this.

Athertonians could, by vote, do anything they want with those funds. They are currently designated for the library. The Council and Town Administration must use them for the library. But, if by 2/3'd vote the residents want to use it to improve roads, they could.

To: Tax Dollars,

Why has the council been hiding this from the residents of the town? The Library runs a $500,000 to $700,000 surplus in property taxes every year.

McKeithen just voted in May for the JPA to keep Atherton's surplus. Did she know that by a 2/3rds vote the residents could adjust the allocation of property tax dollars?

McKeithen did ask for the JPA vote to be discussed on an Atherton Council Agenda.

The money could also be used for the Park.
