Menlo School & College Project
Atherton, posted by Phar Lap, a resident of the Atherton: West Atherton neighborhood, on Jan 5, 2013 at 8:28 pm

The people who live near this must be very excited about this project. What does it sound like when property values tank?

Menlo College and Menlo School jointly are proposing to completely reconstruct the Cartan Field sports facility. Cartan Field is located at the northwest corner of El Camino Real and Alejandra Avenue. All of the existing uses and fields will be completely demolished and rebuilt with state-of the-art designs. Also, four additional tennis courts for a total a ten courts, a new aquatics center and 103 additional parking spaces for a total of 168 spaces will be included. This Project represents upgrading of sports facilities only and is not connected with any increase in enrollment at the schools. There are few changes to the overall Menlo College and Menlo School sporting activities, however, some activities will move from the main campuses to Cartan Field, as detailed in the Initial Study.

The defeat of proposal to build a huge library building in Holbrook Palmer Park for use by largely non-residents perhaps created an awareness of the need to preserve open space and the rural character of Atherton. Slowly the development and growth of the ten school campuses is taking place with new buildings and sport facilities etc. It is hard to object to these improvements but they come at a cost to the town not only in aesthetics but in additional traffic, police services and administration which is not borne by the schools involved.

It would be interesting to ask Atherton residents and, most importantly, the immediate neighbors how they feel about these "sports" improvements at Menlo College.
