Menlo Park hires assistant for city manager

Update: Not to be confused with the assistant city manager, Clay Curtin has been hired to be Menlo Park's new assistant to the city manager, sources told the Almanac.

Really? An Assistant to the City Manager? So what's the matter with the Assistant City Manager, Starla? Looks like fattening of CM staff, and not necessarily of ensuring adequate staff in functional areas. An exodus of directors and managers in departments tell a different story of what's really behind the scenes.

Citizens get the government they deserve.

Have you ever attended a city council meeting? Have you ever addressed the council? Have you ever written to or called one of your elected officials?

Disgusted probably isn't the right word. Try apathetic.

Why would anyone move from Manhattan Beach to Menlo Park? Must be salary.

Now they just need an Undersecretary for this Assistant.

That's efficiency in government. Yes, we need definitely need to pay higher taxes.

Yes, very definitely, an Undersecretary to the Assistant to the City Manager! That would be about right... so that the City Manager can build his empire.

Almanac - how about a story that describes the city's staffing, how many positions are essentially overhead and how many do real work, what is the span of control (i.e., how many employees does a manager manage). comparison to the past, and other cities. The comparison with other cities must consider similar services. For example, Menlo Park staffs daycare so that staffing must be separated out for comparison.

Many have a sense that our city is overstaffed, but is it?

An assistant to the City Manager @ $100K ? Are you serious? How about focussing on reducing the bureaucratic BS and not increasing more bureaucrats to manage it?

Government is often about sustaining itself -- they "create" a need and then hire staff to manage the need. I agree with fed up. It's no wonder that taxes keep going up, somehow we have to pay for our bureaucracy.

For $100K I'll come out of retirement and shuffle paper and attend meetings.

Bob, please attend the next council meeting, and bring your stellar resume. I can tell from your comment that you would be a collaborative employee, and really get things done. I do not expect the city manager will fire Clay on the spot and hire you, but we really believe you should come out of retirement. If you do choose to work for the city, be prepared for the courageous anonymous commenters to have a field day with you.

Menlo Park has one of the largest employee to population ratios in the State.
Compared to other cities our size in San Mateo County, Menlo park has the most full-time employees.
The employee numbers for other cities our size that come close include fire-department employees (and MP does not have an FD).

Even factoring in the special demands that East Menlo Park puts on our city, the number of Menlo Park employees is excessive.

Our new city manager is blind to the long-term pension costs of hiring. This is the same city manager that in February wanted to hire 9 new planners to deal with a temporary glut.

Maybe he should go.

I don't usually chime in to issues such as this since I just work in MP, I don't live there. But, Henry Fox's post screams for a couple of retorts. First and foremost, "even factoring in the special demands that east MP puts on the CIty...." How pompous can you be? Are you talking about crime, safety, demand for service? The good people in West MP are just as likely to need such services as the good people in East MP. Second, where are your facts/stats, Henry? "Menlo Park has one of the largest employee to populations ratios in the state", ok, you stated it, prove it-show me the numbers and their source and I promise I will shut up.
