Obama gets Geography wrong again

Original post made by 57 States or is the President Smarter than a 5th Grader, Menlo Park: The Willows, on Aug 8, 2013

On the Tonight Show with Jay Leno President Obama made a reference to the following ports as being on the Gulf Coast: Charleston, Savannah, and Jacksonville. He said
"
"If we don't deepen our ports all along the Gulf places like Charleston, S.C., or Savannah, Ga., or Jacksonville, Fla. — if we don't do that, these ships are going to go someplace else and we'll lose jobs,"

If the president spent a little less time on the Golf Coast then perhaps he would be more familiar with U.S. Geography. But in his defense at least he correctly identified the states for the U.S. Atlantic Ocean ports.

President was the head of Harvard Law Review.

Let's see, who shall we trust about the questions of the President's intelligence?
- an anonymous poster with a chip on his shoulder the size of district 4?
- one of the two most intelligent American presidents in the last couple decades?

Yup. Obama and Clinton. Compare them to the actor, the former CIA chief who didn't know what a supermarket scanner was, or our all time favorite, the man who couldn't hit oil in Bahrain, in three tries. Who said:

- "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?" G Bush

Golf?

Shall we compare presidential vacations?

CBS: "So far, President Obama has taken 61 vacation days after 31 months in office. At this point in their presidencies, George W. Bush had spent 180 days at his ranch where his staff often joined him for meetings. And Ronald Reagan had taken 112 vacation days at his ranch.

Among recent presidents, Bill Clinton took the least time off -- 28 days."

Fact Check: "President George W. Bush spent even more time away from the presidential mansion in the nation's capital than Reagan. Of the 77 total "vacation" trips the former president made to his Texas ranch while in office, nine of them — all or part of 69 days — came during his first year as president in 2001, according to Knoller."

Of course THE SUPREME PRETZELDENTIAL VACATION belongs to Bush.

Bush stayed on vacation in Crawford after his Aug 6 PDB warned him that Bin Laden wa attacking, suggesting when where and how.

Web Link

Bush stayed on vacation.

5 weeks later, the Twin Towers went down.

Ron Susskind told us what Bush said after the warning: "What we didn't know is what happened in between the briefing and the fishing, and now Suskind is here to tell us. Bush listened to the briefing, Suskind says, then told the CIA briefer: "All right. You've covered your ass, now." "

I'll take Obama. So will most Americans, that's why he won in a landslide.

Obama has played 133 rounds of gold since he became president. Bush 43 played golf 24 times in eight years.

And while Bush spent more time outside of Washington than Obama, it is also worth nothing that nearly all of Bush's vacations were trips back to his Texas ranch or family vacation homes in Maine. And there was a very notable difference Bush's vacations were working vacations while Obama's vacations are a vulgar display of ostentatiousness.

Even the Washington Post, arguably further to the left than the Almanac, has conceded "Bush rarely takes the type of vacation one would consider exotic -- or, to some, even appealing. His notion of relaxation is chopping cedar on his ranch or mountain biking through rough terrain, all in 100-degree-plus temperatures in dusty Texas."

Obama, on the other hand, has traveled to Hawaii every winter and recently the Obama daughters vacationed at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas with a full Secret Service detail.

Meanwhile, the White House proffers up the specious argument that it can not afford to pay Secret Service agents to continue the popular White House tours for other students who are on their spring vacations in Washington, D.C.

The Obamas have gone to Martha's Vineyard multiple times while the country was in recession and Americans were struggling to find jobs. Michelle Obama has taken a whirlwind trip to Spain and a ski trip to Aspen.

Obama took 13 vacations in his first term, which spanned all or part of 83 days. And they have all been far more lavish than Bush's. Obama's annual vacations to Hawaii alone have cost taxpayers at least $20 million during his first term. In 2011 alone, Michelle Obama may have cost taxpayers $10 million on vacations herself. Obama's fantasy golf outing this year cost local law enforcement in Florida a reported $78,205.

Obama has taken self indulgence to the extreme with the taxpayer picking up the tab every time.

"notable difference Bush's vacations were working vacations"

Ha, that would be laughable if not so tragic.

Like when Bush was warned BIN LADIN DETERMINED TO ATTACK US, and he kept working clearing brush in Crawford? That kind of working vacation? Where Bush ignored every one of the "hair on fire" alarm that went off in August 2001?

As for "a full Secret Service detail" - why would you want less? Obama has received more death threats from the haters (ahem) than any other president. What kind of moron makes a big deal about the United States Secret Service doing it's job?

Give it up, @57. Only the fringe reads that garbage and thinks Obama loafs like Bush.

Obama was paying off student loans a few years ago. Ask Ann Richards about Bush. "Poor George, he can't help it — he was born with a silver foot in his mouth"

You lost. Get over it. Obama has taken us from a negative 8% GDP, losing 800,000 jobs in December 2008, to where we are today. We still have lots to do. Help, or shut up and get out of the way.

the Obama golf myth from The Week:

Myth: "Obama has played more golf than any president in history
This isn't even close to being true. Now, there's no question that he plays on a regular basis: 104 rounds from January 2009 through Aug. 4 of this year, the last time he played, according to Mark Knoller, the longtime White House correspondent for CBS Radio. That puts him about in the middle when compared with other duffers-in-chief. It's less than Bill Clinton, and a lot less than Dwight Eisenhower, who played more than 800 rounds over eight years — four times as often as Obama plays.

And why is it an outrage if the president, who heads one of three branches of government, golfs 104 times in three-and-a-half-years, but the head of another branch of government, the REPUBLICAN Speaker of the House, plays four times as much? You heard correctly: John Boehner once told Golf Digest that he plays upwards of 100 rounds a year. Seems like a double standard, no?"

@57: "Obama has played 133 rounds of gold since he became president. Bush 43 played golf 24 times in eight years."

See John Boehner, under: 4 Times the golf as Obama.

same ol, same ol

Same two posters, or groups. One fringie trolling with a story no honestly balanced person believes; the others taking the bait because they feel "we can't let the lies go without correction!!"

Yeah, actually, you can. No one gives any credence to the Breitbart/Malkin/Beck/Limbaugh type fringies out here anyway.

Good pick on the myths from the hill though: Web Link

"Deconstructing the 5 most ridiculous myths about Barack Obama"
1. Obama has played more golf than any president in history
2. Obama has taken more vacation time than any president in history
3. Obama shows his true colors by not going to Arlington National Cemetery
4. Obama has never visited Israel as president, which shows he doesn't give a damn about it

and a good one:
5. Taxes under Obama are at an all-time high - If you buy this one, congratulations: You've failed not just history, but economics as well. Between the combined burden of federal, state, and local income taxes, Americans are parting with the smallest share of their income since 1958. The Bureau of Economic Analysis says we pay 23.6 percent of what we make, down from an average of about 27 percent during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

In 1986 the top 10% of income earners paid 54.6% of all the income taxes. In 2010 they paid 70.6% for an increase of over 29%.

In 1986 the remaining 90% paid 45.4% of all the income taxes. In 2010 they paid 29.4% for a decrease of over 35%.

Also, to compare Obama to Eisenhower is ridiculous. Eisenhower led the Allied Invasion of Europe. Obama didn't even care that the Consulate was under attack in Benghazi. While Americans were being slaughtered by Muslim extremists, the Commander-in-Chief left his subordinates to deal with the crisis while he got his beauty sleep in preparation for a fundraising campaign trip to Vegas.

Yep, raking in the money for the Democratic coffers was far more important than defending American lives. That Obama is a courageous leader.

Oh this is rich indeed. 57 States writes "In 1986 the top 10% of income earners paid 54.6% of all the income taxes. In 2010 they paid 70.6% for an increase of over 29%. In 1986 the remaining 90% paid 45.4% of all the income taxes. In 2010 they paid 29.4% for a decrease of over 35%."

I don't know if these stats are correct -- most of what this poster is writing is sheer nonsense. But even if they are correct, what does it mean? That taxes went up during Obama's presidency for the top 10% --no no and demonstrably no -- or that the wealth of the top 10% became so disproportionate to that of the (former) middle class during a shameless transfer of wealth that began with Reagan and continued through the terms of his Republican predecessors and that of the crypto-Republican Clinton that the top 10% is logically paying a higher percentage of total taxes?

Oh, [portion removed; please don't speculate on the identity of anonymous posters], you hide the key statistic, making the rest of your statistics fall into Mark Twain's 'damn lies' category. For shame.

Before we address that, have you given up pushing the Obama golf and vacation myths that the far right fell for? Now you tried diversion by talking about Eisenhower the hero, a chap who wouldn't win a single GOP primary these days? Too funny!! (Let Ike try the military industrial complex speech in the South Carolina GOP primary! Damn hippie liberal pinko commie!!)

Back to the H lies, errrr, statistics: ...the top 10% of income earners ... in 2010 they paid 70.6%

Why? They pay more BECAUSE THEY OWN MOST OF THE WEALTH. (source: Forbes)

Case closed. They should pay more.

"The well known facts are worth reciting again: the top one percent of the country owns 34.6% of the wealth in total net worth; the next 19% owns 50.5%; the bottom 80% owns 15%.

In financial wealth, the figures are even more startling: (the top 1% of the country owns) 42.7%, (the next 19% owns) 50.3%, and (the rest own) 7.0% respectively." (financial wealth creates income, thus taxes)

So, given they are in a society that gives them so much opportunity and protects their wealth, in a society that has long been based on a progressive tax system to help build the middle class, yes, they should pay that much, or more.

H, if you don't like our country, if you do not like America values like hard work (exemplified by our President, especially compared to Bush or Reagan) and a progressive tax code that supports the great American middle class, perhaps you should move to a foreign land. Like Texas.

Sounds like you are not happy here. Quite cranky, in fact. Been that way for awhile. Anger shortens life. Perhaps it's a health related move - tax deductible?

;-)

See ya!

Thankfully, I live in Palo Alto. Menlo Park seems to be somewhat skewed to the left (even more than Palo Alto-- if that is possible). At the best President Obama has been a marginal president. He has managed to saddle future generations of Americans with an enormous debt thus guaranteeing them a lower standard of living than their parents.

Even Max Baucus, is quitting the Senate in disgust as the signatuire legislation the Affordable Care Act is in the Senator's words "A train wreck". Obama had done nothing to prepare himself for the presidency other than to inveigle a far left press to be his unpaid campaign managers.

A trusting public believed what was writtn in the newspapers. Perhaps they will love their naivete in 2016 and vote for a responsible person to be the next president.

"President Obama has been a marginal president" Ha! Just another fringe rightie with no facts.

Inane.

Bush gave us the first trillion dollar deficit, and left with America hemorrhaging 800,000 jobs a month in Dec 08. A negative 8% GDP.

Obama's job scorecard: Web Link

Compare those Bush Great Recession numbers with the reality of Obama, courtesy Forbes, a member of the " far left press " :

"Over the first four years of the Obama presidency, the deficit shrunk by a total of $300 billion dollars."

- more -

"Compared to the size of the economy, the deficit in 2013 is much lower than in 2009, when Obama took office. The deficit will be 5.3 percent of gross domestic product this year, nearly half the 10.1 percent of GDP in 2009."

Web Link

From IBD, hardly a commie liberal rag:

"U.S. Deficit Shrinking At Fastest Pace Since WWII, Before Fiscal Cliff"

"Believe it or not, the federal deficit has fallen faster over the past three years than it has in any such stretch since demobilization from World War II.

In fact, outside of that post-WWII era, the only time the deficit has fallen faster was when the economy relapsed in 1937, turning the Great Depression into a decade-long affair."

The above post is a bunch of hogwash. Bush beat Obama in every metric

Facts not counting 2013 which is all negative for Obama.

1. The average GDP growth under Bush was 2.16% for years 2001 through years 2008

2. The average GDP growth under Obama was 0.41% for years 2008 through years 2012

3. The rate of GDP growth under Bush was more than 5 times greater than under Obama

For the following years here is economic picture. Bush was bad Obama was worse

57 states doesn't deny the statement "Bush gave us the first trillion dollar deficit, and left with America hemorrhaging 800,000 jobs a month in Dec 08. A negative 8% GDP."

H e switches the frame to be about averages for Bush. A few reasonable economic Bush years that ended in the greatest economic calamity since the Great Depression look better as averages, but the facts remain:

"Bush gave us the first trillion dollar deficit, and left with America hemorrhaging 800,000 jobs a month in Dec 08. A negative 8% GDP."

Saying Bush was "bad" is like saying your teenager had a "bad" trip when he drove well for 7 miles and then caused a 10 car pileup, but only killing a "few" people.

Averages out to "bad", right?

Bush gave us 1 Trillion dollar deficit in 8 years. Obama has given us 4 straight Trillion dollar deficits and is on track to give us a 1.37 Trillion dollar deficit for 2013. So using your analogy on the Trillion dollar threshold, if Bush caused a 10 car wreck then Obama has caused a 19 car wreck in 2009 a 17 car wreck in 2010, a 12 car wreck in 2011 and a 13 car wreck in 2012.

So Bush wrecked 10 cars in 2008 and 33 cars before that and Obama has wrecked 60 cars by the beginning of 2013 and has already wrecked 8 cars this year and is on track to wreck 6 more by year's end. Obama should have his license suspended for reckless driving. BECAUSE OBAMA'S DRIVING IS TWICE AS BAD AS BUSH'S.

So this is how the deficit is shrinking as a percentage of GDP

In 2008 the deficit was 76.16% of GDP
In 2009 the deficit was 93.35% of GDP
In 2010 the deficit was 103.84% of GDP
In 2011 the deficit was 111.21% of GDP
In 2012 the deficit was 118.19% of GDP

Following is in Millions

2008 Real GDP 13,161,900; National Debt 10,024,725
2009 Real GDP 12,757,900; National Debt 11,909,829
2010 Real GDP 13,063,000; National Debt 13,564,623
2011 Real GDP 13,299,100; National Debt 14,790,340
2012 Real GDP 13,593,200; National Debt 16,066,241

So tell me again how the deficit is shrinking

Neighbor H, since you don't like reading Forbes or IBD, here is their updated numbers in handy chart form

Web Link=

accompanying text: "Washington is on the verge of achieving a pace of deficit reduction surpassing even the fiscal tightening that helped to trigger the 1937 economic relapse and extend the decade-long Great Depression.

New CBO projections out Tuesday showed that the deficit would shrink to 4.0% of GDP in fiscal 2013 from 7.0% last year. That would reduce the deficit by a cumulative 5.0% of GDP from 9.0% in fiscal 2010, a three-year decline exceeded only in the years immediately after World War II."

Don't argue with me, argue with them. Contact them here: Web Link You may want to ask them how the stock markets are doing under Obama, from the point Obama inherited the Bush Great Recession.

Thankfully,

The numbers tell the story. There have been at least 6 stories on both websites debunking this myth. Numbers don't lie. Obama is a train wreck and the most fiscally irresponsible President in the history of the United States. George Bush was far worse than Clinton (a fiscally sound president); but when compared to Obama he looks like Scrooge.

Both Forbes and IBD have token lefties and they even admit it. These are editorials. They no more represent the views of Forbes and IBD than does Charles Krauthammer represent the views of the New York Times.

The chart says a lot about deficit but we have a long way to go. The best way to reduce the deficit, both by percentage and raw numbers, is to grow the economy (more jobs = more revenue collection.) That's why recovery from the Bush negative 'growth' rate was essential. Then grow the economy with jobs.

The GOP congress promised jobs but has not passed one jobs bill of their own. 40 bills to repeal obamacare, 30 bills on abortion.

Not a single jobs bill.

Keep your deficit charts. This one tells how we grow the economy Web Link

The repeal/ban votes are a tennis score. Time for John Boenher to schedule more abortion votes to catch up for a tie game (yes, it is a game to Boehner- a game where American jobs do not matter)

"Off to the side being ignored by the ineffectual Line Umpire Boehner, The American Jobs Act, and any other jobs legislation, wait, and wait, and wait, and wait..."
