MENLO-ATHERTON CLASS OF 2010 PROVIDES AID TO OUR GLOBAL COMMUNITY
Original post made by Kelly Todd, Menlo-Atherton High School, on May 16, 2008
This Saturday, May 17th,, the Class of 2010 will be hosting an AIDS Kit Build Day from 10:00am-12:00pm by the Menlo-Atherton baseball field. As a result of personal student requests of donations, spending many afternoons selling a variety of drinks and munchies at sporting events, and hosting group babysitting events for local businesses, the sophomores raised close to $8000 to purchase supplies to create 500 kits to be sent to caregivers of AIDS victims in Africa with assistance from World Vision. Menlo-Atherton High School is the first public high school to raise all of the funding on our own and to have the majority of the kits built by high school students.
After listening to Jason Miles, a branch leader from World Vision, members of the Class of 2010, friends, family, and staff members will work together to assemble kits which include: a carrying case, petroleum jelly, antibacterial soap, disposable latex gloves, washcloths, flashlight with batteries, antifungal cream, cotton balls, notebook and pens for medical notes, anti-diarrheal medicine and acetaminophen (supplies were received directly from World Vision with expiration dates on them), and finally, a handwritten note to encourage the caregiver. Once assembled, the caregiver kits will be shipped overseas by World Vision to Africa where basics like cotton balls, rubber gloves and washcloths are not readily available.
"World Vision is a humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice." World Vision will serve as the Class of 2010's philanthropy until their graduation day in June of 2010. The goal of the class is to raise enough money to purchase supplies and build 2010 kits by the day they graduate in 2010.
