Should Menlo Park levy a utility tax?

Original post made by Richard Hine, editor of The Almanac, on Nov 6, 2006

In the Nov. 7 election, Menlo Park voters are being asked to approve Measure K, which would authorize the city to levy a tax of up to 3.5 percent on water, gas and electric bills; and 2.5 percent on telephone, cell phone and cable bills.

First, Menlo Park had a deficit and we desperately needed money. Now, we have a surplus. Perhaps the new council will direct the city manager's office to come up with reliable financial figures & projections.

Imposing a tax is a serious step that should be taken only when truly necessary. We already have parcel taxes for the schools, county sales tax, state & federal taxes.

I would prefer that the new council work out its plan for El Camino and encourage new businesses that will increase our commercial tax base while respecting environmental concerns. Let's keep the big picture in mind.
