Original post made by Nan Bostick, Menlo Park: Felton Gables, on Jan 20, 2009
One of the most highly trained, gifted, and popular performers on the ragtime/jazz circuit, Mimi Blais is noted for her flawless technique at the piano, her wit, her humorous stage personas, and her charming French accent. Often dubbed "the female Victor Borge," "the Céline Dion of the keyboard," and "the French Canadian Liberacette," the title she wears most proudly is "The New Queen of Ragtime." In addition to the elaborate and hilarious "Mimi and Friends" shows she produces every year for the Royal Theatre in Versailles, MO, Mimi is the creator of two one-woman shows: "Once Upon a Time Ragtime," to illustrate the importance of ragtime music in the evolution of the American culture, and "An Afternoon with Jean-Baptiste Lafrenière," to introduce the world to Quebec's first published ragtime composer.
A prolific recording artist and composer, Mimi is a top headliner at music festivals worldwide, including the Sziget Festival in Budapest, Hungary, the Oslo, Norway Jazz Festival, the annual Blind Boone and Scott Joplin Ragtime Festivals in Missouri, San Diego's Dixieland Jazz Festival, and Sacramento's West Coast Ragtime Festival. She studied at the Quebec Conservatory of Music and McGill University in Montreal, earning advanced degrees in both classical piano and performing arts. And can she ever perform, adding humor, history, theatrics, and always music that caresses, dazzles, speaks to the audience, and touches the soul.
