A mother and her young daughter who drowned after a strong current yanked them into the Pacific Ocean from Montara State Beach on Monday were nearly able to make it back to shore, but the riptide was too powerful, a sheriff's lieutenant said Tuesday.

It's a shame the mother didn't heed the warning on the sign that you must walk past to get to the beach from the parking area, which clearly warns of sudden dangerous waves and has warnings against wading and swimming and dangerous currents.
It's right next to the path, she couldn't have missed it.

Well, Read, maybe she did miss it. She might have been talking -- or laughing, or singing -- with the kids while walking down to the sea. It would be easy to be distracted enough to miss signs.
It's also easy to sit back and be smug in the face of someone else's tragedy. Do you really think she would have intentionally put those children in harm's way? Have some compassion already.
