On Saturday, October 28, at 8 p.m., James Welch and Russell Hancock return to the stage together to present Palo Alto's annual Halloween concert, this year in its 14th year. James Welch, organist of St. Mark's Church, and pianist Russell Hancock, a.k.a. "Frankensteinway", will bring suitably spooky and entertaining pieces for the season.
This year's program will feature a wide variety of selections, including a gothic "Halloween March," a jazz duo by American composer Joe Utterback, and Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance." Other offerings will be a piece by American composer Joseph Clokey, which is marked to be played "With barbaric abandon," and a Widor's Allegro with a virtuoso cadenza written by a New York theatre organist in 1920 for the foot pedals alone.
James Welch and Russell Hancock, as the premiere piano-organ duo in the Western United States have appeared across the country and locally in recent years, performing literature from 19th century France and Germany, and numerous contemporary American works.
A special guest on the program will be Welch's 8-year old son Nicholas, who is already excelling at the piano and organ. Nicholas is a third-grader at El Carmelo Elementary School, and as soon as his legs were long enough to reach the organ pedals, he started learning organ works by Bach.
The pipe organ at St. Mark's Church, with over 5,000 pipes, is one of the largest in the state. There will be a camera and large screen so everyone in the audience can see the organist in action--both hands and both feet, pulling out all the stops for an entertaining evenings.
Feel free to come in costume. $10 donation requested at the door. For further information, call 650 326-3800 or 650 856-9700.
