How it all started

In 1949 the Peninsula Housing Association began the development of Ladera as a cooperative community. Here the first structures rise on the corner of Aliso Way and La Cuesta Drive. The building on the right was the sales office. Photo courtesy of Portola Valley Archives.

The initial core group consisted of mainly Stanford faculty. Good idea for a start, but the real world caught up with them. Hare, Brewer and Kelley (Old time local real estate firm)- Rye Kelley especially was the guiding light, in making Ladera a success.

Suggestion, do some in-depth research and then write the story. HBK also developed Lindenwood in Atherton and Pajaro Dunes on Monterey Bay.
