I live in Washington, DC, but grew up in Atherton and attended Sacred Heart. My sister just sent me and my other three sisters, also Sacred Heart alumnae, the link to this article. The heading on her Email was "Another reason not to send your kids to Sacred Heart". Yup!

And peace and good will to you, too, Anne. I hate to tell you this, but your comment says far more about you than it does about the artist written about in the article, or about Sacred Heart. I don't know either one of you, nor do I have any feelings for or against Sacred Heart. But I'd say Mr. Lamkin's achievement reflects well on the school, whereas your pettiness does just the opposite. Sad.

Diana, I attended Sacred Heart Menlo and have young relatives in the military, and I find it offensive that SH is touting this display as in some way a tribute to and a reflection of the school. Moreover, if those running the place were as interested in the spiritual development of their students, as opposed to much more worldly achievements, they would be a greater success in the eyes of the remarkable woman who founded the order that runs/ran it. It's called "Sacred Heart" for a reason, but even in my day I don't recall any encouragement at all to that devotion. I agree with Anne.

After reading Anne's and Maggie's comments, I have to wonder if Sacred Heart provided any critical thinking instruction while these posters were there. This was an art competition, for heaven's sake. And the winner, whom I don't know so no disclaimer is needed, was using his artistic skills to express himself. So why this backlash? Are you beating the drums of war? Haven't they been beaten enough in the last 10 years? For that matter, throughout history?

Speaking of history, Stephen Greenblatt has an interesting new book out called <<The Swerve>> that goes into great and horrifying detail about the Catholic Church's dominance in the Western World from about 200 AD to about 1500. The church was the driving force leading to, then sustaining for centuries, the Dark Ages with its anti-intellectual, anti-art, anti-life despotism. My disdain for organized religion only intensified after reading this book, and after reading the Dark Age comments on this forum.

As the artist behind this piece, I love to see how people respond to my work. If I get negative responses, like that of Anne or Diana, it just goes to show my art was a success in evoking something from the audience. My work doesn't reflect any of Sacred Heart values or beliefs from my teachers. I entered this piece to a competition, not at all related to Sacred Heart, but they decided to embrace it (crazy, I know). If you pin me down as a godless heathen who has no respect for military, so be it. Just try your best to be a bit open minded, who knows it could work for you.

If you want to see more pieces like this from my concentration you can go to my flickr

Thanks, Nick
