Honoring Kathy McKeithen

Original post made by Grateful resident on Nov 27, 2012

Tomorrow night will be Kathy McKeithen's last as an Atherton council member.

She has served this community for twelve years. She decided not to run for a fourth term. On a recent post, an anonymous blogger commented she should "go quietly."

Certainly there has been an avalanche of attacks against her as she prepares to step down, all anonymous, many on the vicious blog that was created to attack her. If people wished her to step down quietly, that's a curious way to achieve it.

Many people have strong opinions about Kathy McKeithen. That's because when she thought something was wrong, she spoke up about it, and tenaciously.

I actually admire people who are passionate about making a difference, even when I disagree strongly with their politics. Bernie Sanders and Barney Frank come to my mind.

Unfortunately, very few people who disagree with Kathy have afforded her that respect, which she fully deserves. She has served this community honorably, and tirelessly. The amount and nature of anonymous attacks just underscores how hard she fought to change things, and how successful she was.

Kathy,
I note that you will not stand for re-election to the Town Council. I want to thank you for your years of dedicated service to the community and for your integrity and zeal during your service.

There IS life after elected office - I hope you enjoy those extra hours and the luxury of being a citizen observer ( and perhaps commentator).

Kathy,
Your arrogance is simply unbelievable.
As the person who initiated the issue of the November ballot via the citizens' initiative BEFORE you even had the courage to address the issue, I can tell you, Kathy, that you have it all wrong.

Yes on Measure F - Lying or Delusion??

The just circulated mailer urging a Yes on Measure F states:
"Build Atherton's New library - No Cost to Taxpayers".

Either the supporters are deliberately lying or they are delusional to think that using money which has been collected from taxpayers is not using taxpayers' money.
I am not sure which is worse - lying or financial stupidity.

What a pity, Peter, that you did not think also to include the many falsifications and obfuscations told by the opponents of Measure F "

James Dobbie:"Peter,If you are concerned about lies you should read the SAVE OUR PARK brochure."

How sad that two of our elected officials defending lying by saying that the other side is lying.

It has now been over two weeks since the totally deceptive Yes on F flyer was mailed to all Atherton residents claiming - ""Build Atherton's New library - No Cost to Taxpayers".
Yet the individuals responsible for that mailer have failed to either publicly apologize for this blatant falsehood or to send out a corrected mailer.
How many voters will make their decision based on this blatant falsehood?

Peter, do not despair. I am sure Denise Kupperman, Kathy McKeithen or Wally Sleeth will issue a correction to the falsehood on November 7th.

Perhaps whomever produced the factually incorrect Measure F mailer ("Build Atherton's New library - No Cost to Taxpayers".) would be so kind and honest as to send out a corrected version well before election day.
This would be a totally taxpayer funded facility and to state otherwise is simply a lie.

To Grateful Resident,

You wrote: "Many people have strong opinions about Kathy McKeithen. That's because when she thought something was wrong, she spoke up about it, and tenaciously."

That is not the reason. I reposted from former Library issues to demonstrate that to you. She spent thousands of hours and thousands of taxpayer dollars "tenaciously" for a library in the park even though 70% of the town was asking her to stop because they felt "something was wrong."

Yesterday's Almanac Headline is: "Kathy McKeithen leaves council seat fighting- Atherton councilwoman is unhappy with the city manager's confidentiality policy."

The council code of conduct is not to publicly critize staff. For fourteen years Kathy McKeithen has "tenaciously" critized staff, residents, committee members, and council members. What benefit is it to go to the paper to critize the new city manager?

Mr. Carpenter is being a diplomat with his kind words. Howevert his other posts paint a different picture of his opinion of Ms. McKeithen.

Rather than "go quietly" and have a good transition, she ends her term:
1. Critical of the New City Manager

2. Seeking to vote on a compensation plan that will impact contract talks next year, ignoring the vote of the people for the newly elected council member to make the decision.

3. With her supporters anonymously posting critical statements of that council member.

4. Requesting a Furlough for staff, while the Mayor asks for $6,000.00 to throw a party at the end of her term.

5. Tonight she has asked for extra time to deliver a speech on her twelve years. Will she talk about how she ended the "Waste and Mismanagement" of previous Atherton Councils. Yet she supported stopping rentals in the Park costing the town $90,000.00 in lost revenue to help justify the library she so badly wanted.

Before that she supported spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on lawsuits and legal action against the school district and residents.

6. Her passion to build Atherton Reserves lead to three illegal tax increases which had to be refunded and now Atherton finds itself with severe budget problems.

There will never be another council member like Kathy McKeithen, and I mean that in the best possible way. Kathy, You are the best! THANK YOU.

While we debate whether or not Kathy deserves a thank you. I think it is important for everyone to be aware that much to my shock and surprise, at last night's meeting Ms. Keithen continued her unprofessional ways when in her departure speech she publicly thanked Mayor Widmer and Councilman Dobbie for their work and blatantly ignored councilmembers Carlson and Lewis. The lack of civility, common courtesy and professionalism must change in our town, it is an absolute embarassment. I am sure I was not alone in my shock at Ms. McKeithen's final act of disrepect for her fellow elected officials.

Kathy, don't let the door hit you on the way out! Ultimately she was very not very good for this town.

Thank you, Ms. Lewis, for being obnoxious and rude to Kathy so much of the time? That's funny. And, I didn't see Ms. Lewis paying any accolades to Kathy either, which also would have been "proper decorum."
