The 2013 Arctic summer has led to a record increase in the polar ice cap

Original post made by Roald Amundsen, another community, on Sep 10, 2013

The Arctic polar icecap has increased 60% since the summer of 2012 adding nearly One million square miles of ice.

The ice is stretching from Canada to Russia and this is before the annual refreeze. The Northwest passage is completely blocked with ice.

Peter Carpenter is a registered user.

This is a very misleading article.

Here is a good critique:

Who owns the telegraph these days? Rupert Murdoch types? Of Cell Phone Hacking Scandal fame?

"Telegraph (UK) Hayley Dixon: Global warming? No, actually we're cooling, claim scientists.

Actually, the story only cites a scientist, the fellow at Wisconsin, not "scientists" which when put that way usually means at least a whole school of (peer-reviewed) thought it, not one somebody prefacing his remark with "I think ...)"

- See more at: Web Link

The deniers will grasp onto any "scientist" that claims warming isn't real. Where were they after Superstorm Sandy? (hint: denying relief funds, at least until tornadoes and fires hit their states!)

Nice reference to Roald, tho... a point for that.

The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has admitted that it's predictions about global warming were grossly overestimated.

A 'secret report leaked' in advance to the Daily Mail? Ever picked up a copy of the Daily Mail?

Look at the home page. The "articles" below the shooting news today: Web Link

- Father who crashed car wearing prosthetic breasts at 160kmph while high on meth with two daughters in the back is jailed for 29 months

- Is this the dream job for a couch potato? Nasa will pay volunteers $5,000 a month just for lying in bed for 70 days

- So should you keep eggs in the fridge? Scientists crack the age-old argument over whether chilled or room temperature is best

- The cancer patient cured by a BROKEN radiotherapy machine and the paralyzed man who walked after visiting Lourdes: New book shows incredible influence of the mind over the body

- What's in YOUR handbag? Lipstick, diary, iPhone... plus e.coli, deadly bacteria and traces of excrement
- 'I'm first and foremost American': New Miss America brushes off racist abuse as she beats injured Miss Florida and tattooed soldier

Roald: try getting your "news" from a more trustworthy publication.

Perhaps the National Enquirer.

Yes, try the National enquirer, after cleaning your purse out of all the "e.coli, deadly bacteria and traces of excrement"

I'd really, really like to see some photos. No, not of the "Father who crashed car wearing prosthetic breasts at 160kmph while high on meth" or what the "dream job for a couch potato" or even "eggs in the fridge".

I'd like to see before & after photos of the Arctic polar ice cap, so we can see this wonderful increase for ourselves.

Nah, I want to see the supposed leaked report, not by a tabloid sharing prosthetic breasts, but the whole report by the IPCC.

The Guardian:

"On 13 September, the expanse of frozen water in the Arctic fell to 5.10 million square kilometres (1.97 million square miles), the sixth-lowest such measurement on record, the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) said in a statement. The annual minimum was not as extreme as the collapse of sea ice last year, which smashed through all records. But it was still well below the average of the last three decades.

"The overall trend is still decidedly downwards," the NSIDC director, Mark Serreze, said in a statement. "The pattern we've seen so far is an overall downward trend in summer ice extent, punctuated by ups and downs due to natural variability in weather patterns and ocean conditions."

He went on: "We could be looking at summers with essentially no sea ice on the Arctic Ocean only a few decades from now."

Poster @Roald is factually misleading. 2012 was the worst ever for ice. To be a 60% improvement on the worst ever isn't saying much. "But it was still well below the average of the last three decades."

Deniers use three types of lies: Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics.

Why ice is important: Web Link

Guardian: "Arctic on course for ice-free summer 'within decades', scientists say - National Snow and Ice Data Center says expanse of ice in Arctic on 13 September was sixth-lowest of all time" Web Link

I understand the deniers that take money from Exxon, the Kochs (Heartland) etc.. Bio-stitutes do it for the cash.

What I don't understand are the lay deniers who refuse to face facts.

Now we now the rest of the story...

Poster screams "60% increase in ice" at the top of his lungs.

Reality: the increase is over the worst year ever.

Like a stock trader screaming "look a the market rise" after a 1,000 point drop. In the markets, they used to call that a dead-cat-bounce - "even a dead cat will bounce if it falls from high enough".

Even the Arctic will have more ice the next year after an all time record low.

How do some people sleep at night?
