Stanford, CA, May 2007— “Engaged Technology-Empowered Communities of Practice: Learning to Learn, Learning to Teach,” a panel discussion on the power and potential of knowledge sharing, social networking technology, and open educational resources, will be presented by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching on Tuesday, May 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. (reception at 5:30) at Carnegie’s Center for Teachers and Teaching, 51 Vista Lane in Stanford, Calif.
Carnegie Senior Scholar and Knowledge Media Laboratory Director Toru Iiyoshi and former Chief Scientist of Xerox Corporation John Seely Brown will lead the community conversation, and will focus on ways that knowledge sharing and social networking technology enables communities of students and instructors to better learn and teach by harnessing a growing number of open educational resources. They will also explore how new virtual environments and online games such as Second Life and World of Warcraft are opening up new possibilities of promoting learning through engaged, social interplay and activities. Audience participation and a general discussion on technology-enabled open education and new culture of learning and teaching will follow the initial presentation.
This free forum is the last of four events in Carnegie’s 2006-2007 Community Event Series, focusing on engagement in undergraduate education. The event will include lessons from Opening up Education: Building Common Technology, Content, and Knowledge, to be published with MIT Press this fall, which includes essays by Iiyoshi and Brown.
