How to find out campaign contributions for council candidates?

Original post made by Information, we need information on Oct 16, 2008

A question, not an opinion (I know, shocking in these forums!): how does one find out the amounts and names of contributors to the different city council candidates? I see posts referring to candidate X having $7bazillion from unions while candidate Y has a million times that from Developers. How can we get our hands on the facts? Perhaps the Almanac can print the top 10 for each?

I also wonder whether, given limits to contributions, classes of contributors could be lumped together just in case one interest group is spreading their contributions out over many seemingly independent entities? For example, does the Flying Saucer Landing Pad Assn give funds to Citizens For Extraterrestials with the idea that the funds will then be given to the candidate they support, thus doubling their effective contribution limit?

Call me suspicious, but I *did* grow up listening to Mae Brussell on the radio....

You can review the campaign disclosure forms for Menlo Park City Council candidates at city hall. They're available in the city clerk's office, which is on the second floor of the administration building. Unfortunately, they're not available online.

And a new batch of campaign spending reports covering the first half of October are due by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23.

Thanks. Does the Almanac plan on reporting on this? I've never looked at these disclosures before but wonder if it is a reasonable task to put together a "top 10" list of contributors?
