The secrecy that's allowed for cops and other law enforcement people in this state is disgusting. Sure, certain precautions are warranted because of the kind of work they do, but how is it that all the rules of open government and accountability can be flushed down the toilet just because the public worker wears a badge. The fact that these guys have such tremendous power over citizens -- they carry guns, for god's sake -- makes it even more important for the public to know about their performance and behavior. This fortress of secrecy is sheer insanity.

To Discusted: You are wrong in your thinking. Any issue involving a personell issue must be kept confidential until the conclusion of the investigation. The bigger question is this...first Atherton hired [portion removed by Almanac staff] Steve Cader as the Chief and had to get rid of him after multiple issues including [portion removed] voter fraud. Around the same time, they had to hire and fire Don Guluzzy (CIty Manager)[portion removed]. Now all the goings on over at town hall involving criminal allegations. Then this officer being investigated which IS criminal. HELLO!!!! Wake up people...the town of atherton is dirty from top to bottom and this included the so called self appointed coffee clatch "City Counsel". Enough is enough. Bring the Sheriff's Office in. It would save MILLIONS and if they are good enought for Woodside and Portola Valley they are certainly able to handle the pea sized Atherton.

Well, annoyed is right. Too bad the almanac chose to cover over what I'm sure were correct descriptions of both Cader and Guluzzy. I remember the havoc those to caused and the carnage that was left in their wake. I agree it is time for a COMPLETE overhaul of ALL Town government operations. I just hope the laughingstock of a Town Counsel did not hire yet another less than honest Town Manager. Time for new blood and time for another agency (the sheriff's office) to be brought in to provide service without the drama. The bonus of the tax payers saving millions of dollars is reason enough.

Service without drama, You are joking right?

Anybody hear of Operation Dollhouse this last April 21, 2007 @ 9:30 PM. Las Vegas Nevada

Do you seriously believe that two CUSTOMERS of Human Trafficking Underaged Sex Slaves could supply your law enforcement. I don't think so.

What makes this nation great are our Rights, "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights". One of those unalienable rights is the freedom of speech.

For "Disgusted, annoyed, citizen and laughing" the above quote is from the Declaration of Independence. I say that because the statements you have made are all ignorant to the facts and incorrect.

Michael is correct with his posting. Do "Disgusted, annoyed, citizen and laughing" even know that the Sheriff's Office is the highest paid law enforcement agency in this county and one of the highest paid in the state?

Now that "Disgusted, annoyed, citizen and laughing" have been educated how do their statements make any sense? "annoyed" (not capitalized on purpose) says "Bring the Sheriff's Office in. It would save MILLIONS and if they are good enought for Woodside and Portola Valley ". (yes, "enought" is a direct quote). Really "annoyed", I truly hope you have someone that does your taxes. Your math is fuzzy at best.

I truly believe Atherton Police provide services to their customers that other police agencies do not have time to do. "laughing" feels one of the services is a "total joke". When people are on vacation and the newspapers pile up, what does that tell something to your local burglar? Is it not crime prevention to just pick-up a newspaper "laughing"? I realize that other police agencies do not have the time to do that kind of service. If they did maybe their crime rate would be as low as Atherton's.

The Town Council commissioned a survey that was done last year. One of the questions asked, "Should the town should contract out police services to the Sheriff's Office"? The answer was a resounding NO! In fact the citizens gave the Atherton Police Department a resounding 97% overall approval rating.

"Disgusted, annoyed, citizen and laughing" what was your police departments rating? Do you feel you are getting the services from your police department you should be getting? Atherton citizens, at least 97% of them, feel they are.

"laughing" is it beneath a police department to provide services that citizens say they want, when they can be done? Is this one of the reasons the crime rate and approval rating of the Atherton Police Department is so high? Is it a joke to have a 97% approval rating from the citizens that they serve? Is it a joke that because the crime rate is so low these services can be accomplished? Does your police department allow you to keep a house key on file, just in case you get locked out or need medical attention? Does your police department allow your alarm come directly to the dispatch center at no charge? It sounds like the "That Dept is a total joke" statement is ignorant. It is especially ignorant after being educated with the facts.

"Disgusted, annoyed, citizen and laughing" every government agency have their own issues. "Disgusted, annoyed", when was the last time you did a ride-along with your police departments? Do you get the services from your police departments you want and feel you deserve"? Would you rate your police department with a 97% approval rating?

"citizen", when was the last time you did a ride-along with the Atherton Police Department? Seeing you would probably be one of the 3% that do not approve of the police departments performance maybe you could be educated too. "citizen", please get a math refresher course. The math quote "The bonus of the tax payers saving millions of dollars is reason enough" is really laughable, if not sad.

The Atherton Police Department is a professional organization with excellent employees. For those who do not know how an internal affairs investigation is handled, here you go. The employee is placed on administrative leave. The investigation is conducted and the complaint is sustained, not sustained, unfounded or if the officer has been exonerated.

To convict anyone before a complete vetting is un-American. Would you like to be convicted and castigated before an investigation is done? To drag any officer or citizen over the coals before an out-come is arrived at is also ignorant. But you have all proven that is what you are already.

Yes, I live in another community and wish I had the services that are offered by the Atherton Police Department, just for the record.

John M...Ha...seems I hit a nerve. Clearly you work for that joke of an agency. Yes, I have the facts. I used to BE an Atherton Officer before I got smart and left for a professional agency (not the S/O FYI) As for my typo...I sure you have never had a typo!! You are as ignorant as your post. The facts are clear. Atherton has a history of less than stellar employees. Were you there with Cader, Guluzzy, and others that will remain nameless?? The City Counsel has a history of hiring less than ethical people not to mention appointing each other over and over and over again. Yes the Sheriff and Undersheriff were clearly wrong in Las Vegas. But the service they provide to Woodside, Portola Valley, West Menlo Park and Ladera are clearly more than Atherton could ever need. All officers do is respond to alarm calls, barking dogs and oridinance complaints with the occassional accident or crime. Sorry John M,you embellish the PD to suit your own ego. It hurts to be embarrassed. I get it, I used to be you trying to defend something that is laughable!!!

All,

Atherton PD is handling this situation with their officer as is protocol with any police office (sherrifs deputies included) anywhere in this state.

The bottom line is, 97% of us DO like the services of our police department, public works department and town administration (you can't have one without the other). If barking dogs and loud parties are as bad as it gets around here...so be it. The smart bad guys know not to try anything around here.

We're like Patriots fans, everybody around us wants us to go down, but it ain't gonna happen anytime soon!

Seems to me that the crime rate in Atherton is so low because:
1) Everyone lives in their own fortified castle, completely surrounded by walls high enough that even that SF Zoo tiger couldn't scale.
2) It is a purely residential community - no businesses to rob.
3) A good % of people probably have their own bodyguard (& nanny & maid & chauffeur & etc.)

As such, other than the occasional traffic accident on one of the few real roads in town (El Camino, Middlefield, Alameda), the cops have little to do - so they might as well go around and pick up old newspapers and respond to alarms and barking dogs. Seems like the perfect retirement job for real cops (SF PD, Oakland PD, etc.).

Dear Realitycheck,

try "jealously check" for a handle next time, it certainly suits your comments more accuratly. If you ever actually DROVE through the town or had a friend or two that lived here, you might understand what the people of this community want and pay for. Yes, pay for. We all pay a parcel tax here, which is voted on by the residents every 4 years and directly funds the backbone of this town. And town departments know if they they disappoint...they don't get the $$. We see evidence of their efforts regularly in or parks, on our streets and, yes, police presence.

Now how many of YOUR city's departments are accountable to the their residents in that type of way. If they were, perhaps there would be more officers putting their feet on the ground (and performing services to the residents) like in Atherton.

This system should be a MODEL for all of you.

Yeh right, Butlers and chauffers...and Richy Rich lives here, too.

I'm only going to lower myself this once. Thank you wishyouwerehere. I only wish the other 97%er's like yourself would speak up and support the job we do, not like the bitter ex-employees or liberal cop haters that have no better way to spend their time. As for the "Menlo Park" residents replying to this thread, why don't you just identify yourselves as Atherton residents? Why would Menlo Park residents care about Atherton anyway, when Menlo Park has their share of problems?

"For those who understand, no explanation is necessary. for those who don't, no explanation will suffice.

I don't have to be an Atherton resident to support the police in the difficult job they do. Wherever they serve, they have AT LEAST the same right as anyone else to be considered "innocent until proven guilty".
