The Menlo Park Parks and Rec Commissions recommended reconfiguration of Burgess Park will not simply fill in the baseball diamond with grass to enlarge the soccer field into a full size adult field, it will in fact destroy the baseball field. A baseball field needs a skin - the dirt area from the first to second, and the second to third base paths to the border of the outfield you see on all baseball fields. Putting grass in that area absolutely will not work for several reasons. The all dirt infield as it exists now could and should be grass, but the pitchers mound and the skin area must remain dirt to function as a baseball field. If the consultant the commission hired was at all credible, they know that. Of course their recommendation will create another bigger adult size soccer field just like the other brand new adult size field we are building in Menlo Park. But, the only full sized baseball field in town will be destroyed. The Junior Little League program and anyone else older than 12 will have no place to play, and the substantial expense made only 4 years ago for the baseball fencing, backstop, dugouts, and bleachers will be useless.

Obviously the Park and Rec committee is out of control on this issue. Thank heavens they are only an advisory committee and have no real power.
Those lobbying for keeping the current configuration should immediately write their council persons and let them know how you feel. Don't let the soccer Moms out there run over you.
I for one would certainly oppose spending money in this fashion.
Paula Maurano has a political agenda in mind here and just as she provoked the infamous exchange between her and council persons Fergusson and Robinson over the Park Theater, she is probably trying to induce another with this ridiculous proposal. Her legacy is with the now deposed Winkler, DuBoc and Jellins crowd.
Park and Rec should realize that soccer is not the only sport in town, and perhpas the same should be said of gymnastics, which seesm to be a major beneficiary of the proposed new gym facilities as now envisioned.

Editor, couldn't you have added to the existing thread instead of starting a new one? There isn't enough traffic on this board to merit two threads on the same topic.
