The MA varsity baseball team fell to Sequoia in the first league game of the season after 10 innings in a race to beat the rain on March 22 at Sequoia even though they out hit the Cherokees 13-7. The Cherokees scored first in the 4th inning after loading the bases with 1 out. Only one runner scored leaving three on base after a single. The Bears answered back in the top of the 5th with 4 consecutive singles by Nick Lange, Kyle Zirbes, Dylan Cook and Miles Brewer scoring 2 by taking the extra bags. 6 of the next 7 Sequoia batters were retired until the bottom of the seventh when the Cherokees struck back scoring 2 on a hit batter, a single, advancing on a wild pitch, a ground ball and a squeeze bunt. Nick Lange retired to center after pitching those 7 innings with the score tied despite giving up only 6 hits, 1 walk and striking out 6. Ryan Cortez took over, pitching 2 scoreless innings and giving his team 3 chances to score. Casey Eason lead off the 9th with a double but was left there by his teammates. In the top of the 10th one runner reached (Ryan Cortez) on a bunt single (the 3rd for the team) only to be caught off 2nd on a broken play. Sequoia capitalized on a lead off walk followed by a (walk off) double by Jake Mauldrin ending the game, 4-3.
The Bears are now 1-1 in 10 inning games and are 5-3 overall.
