Top MP city staff go for raises again tonight

Original post made by Henry Riggs, Menlo Park: Suburban Park/Lorelei Manor/Flood Park Triangle, on Jul 16, 2013

Who came up w the phrase "tone deaf"? Its so descriptive for decision makers that just don't get it.
In June, the upper management group of Menlo's city government took a shot at raises for themselves - some significant - using the tried and true line that "they get more in Palo Alto" or wherever; council said No. Guys, didn't you get it that the people that pay your salaries and a fine pension for life think that government employee deals got out of hand? Not just in Menlo, but in the cities you compare yourselves to. Sorry, but we are not all Google stock optioners - most of us work for a living, risk unemployment and don't have the $2.4 million in the IRA to match your retirement deal, so its hard to support you when you ask for More. Meanwhile, the city is hoping that hourly city workers will contribute more to their good retirement deals - your ask as managers doesn't look good.
Menlo Park has some great employees and some great managers too. Thats not the point. It can't always be More, More. We've cheapened our roads, our park maintenance, our library hours; we've raised fees on everything. When do we restore city services?
City or business, financial planning is a long term thing. Council, please, lets find another way to appreciate our city staff than tapping the bank every time we snag some cash.

Thank you Henry. This is a year when we are going to be facing strong pressure for public employee pay and benefits increase in Menlo Park, Atherton and the Fire District. The only way to stop this will be strong citizen voices like Henry's.
