HISTORIC FOLGER ESTATE STABLE FUNDRAISING PROJECT HITS MILESTONE

Original post made by Judith Schwartz on Oct 26, 2007

The Friends of Huddart and Wunderlich Park announced that the capital campaign to restore the historic Folger Estate Stable in Wunderlich Park has achieved its goal of $3.3 million. Jill Daly, Co-President of the Friends' Board and Co-Chair of the Stable Campaign Committee said, "Our organization wishes to thank all of our donors and volunteers who contributed their time and money over the past four years. Susan Lang, the Co-chair of the Stable Campaign Committee, was particularly instrumental in spearheading the effort." A complete list of donors may be found on the Friends' website: Web Link

Lang, who grew up in Marin County with horses of her own, saw the equestrian way of life disappearing. "The Folger Stable is an historic building worth saving —there are so few architectural icons left in the area and this one was rapidly deteriorating. It is especially gratifying that members of local equestrian groups assembled $100,000 in small contributions to put us over the top. This reflects a continued interest in preserving the unique bond between people and horses that is part of our collective American heritage."
The building, designed by noted architect Arthur Brown Jr., was built in 1905 for the Folger family. It is owned by the County of San Mateo, as part of a 942 acre parcel donated by Martin Wunderlich in 1974.

"The Parks Department simply didn't have the money to pay for restoration. The Friends demonstrate how a public-private partnership can work. They formed the Stable Campaign Committee to raise the funds while the County contributes in-kind services worth $500,000," says Dave Holland, Director, San Mateo County Parks Department.

Suzanne Muller, Friends' Co-President adds, "We'll be working with the County to complete the renovation in a timely fashion, to keep the stable operating during construction, and to raise an additional $1 million endowment to support on-going maintenance as well as environmental, equestrian, and historic programs for children at Wunderlich and Huddart Parks. Our vision for the Folger Stable is a natural extension of the Friends' mission. If we want future generations to care about preserving these examples of wilderness and our history, we have to expose them to these treasures while they're young."
