Jerry Carlson's parting manipulation
Original post made by Atherton Observer on Jun 20, 2013
Jerry Carlson's cynical character came to the fore on June 19, with his "dead hand" maneuver passing the vice mayor's job to Newbie Cary Wiest 11 days before Jerry's resignation from the Council is effective. Never before has a retiring Atherton Councilmember had the audacity to move up the date he'd step aside from one post (Vice Mayor) so that in his last meeting as a mere member of the Council he could cast the deciding vote on his successor. While this choreography of council chairs was initiated by Jerry, no doubt the director of the show was Queen Elizabeth, who is desperate to continue her reign with the consort of her choice. Jerry's vote for someone who knows so little about Atherton won't affect him, since he's leaving town.
The good thing about such a blatant grab for power is that Wiest (who voted for himself) has zero legitimacy to succeed Lewis as Mayor next year. Good-bye, Jerry. We'll miss your self-righteous scripted remarks.

Cary Wiest's appointment to vice mayor is well deserved. He captured the hearts and minds of Atherton voters in the last election with his platform of eschewing the war Kathy McKeithen waged on the Atherton Police Department, treating Police Officers with respect, and not shortsightedly looking at costs when compensating Atherton's Police Officers.
For Dobbie and Widmer, crying foul, why was it okay for Widmer to become vice mayor, passing over Elizabeth Lewis, whose turn it was? Turnabout is fair play.
And Cary will make a great mayor in 2014.

Looks like the APOA is getting what it paid for.

Jerry Carlson did the right thing. Without his vote, there would have been a deadlocked 2-2 tie for Vice-Mayor and town would have no vice-mayor.
All other council members have been vice-mayor and mayor, and the policy is to rotate to whoever has not been vice-mayor as the next in line.
