'Girls are Champions' holds writing, art contest

Original post made by Poster on Sep 25, 2007

The nonprofit Girls are Champions is seeking entries for a writing and drawing contest for girls from third grade through high school.
The new organization is sponsoring the contest "to help girls express strong voices and personal stories," says Lisa Izzi of Menlo Park, Girls are Champions' founder.
Entries for both the writing and drawing categories will be judged in three age groups: third through fifth grade; sixth through eighth grades; and high school.
There is a $15 registration fee for entering the contest; a fee waiver for financial hardship is available.
For the writing contest, girls should submit an original essay or story of 300 to 600 words. Entries should be e-mailed to contest@GirlsAreChampions.org.
Drawing entries should be submitted on 8-by-10 paper; the artist can choose her drawing material (for example, pencil, crayon, pastels, etc.). Entries should be mailed to: 1037 Marcussen Drive, Menlo Park, CA 94025.
All entries must be received by Oct. 18.
For both categories, the subject matter should express the entrant's personal experience in sport or an activity.
Each girl who enters the contest will be acknowledged on the Girls are Champions Web site. Finalists will receive gift certificates and an invitation to appear on the organization's TV show, produced at the Peninsula TV studio in San Carlos. The top two finalists in each category will have their entry published on the Web site.
Contest entries for both the writing and drawing categories will be judged in three age groups: third through fifth grade; sixth through eighth grades; and high school.
Judges will include Olympic Gold Medalist Brandi Chastain, Menlo Park Mayor Kelly Fergusson, and other community, athletic and business leaders.
For more information about contest rules and entry guidelines, go to Web Link or send an e-mail to Jackie Schoof at contest@GirlsAreChampions.org. Entry forms can be downloaded from the Web site.
