Around Town: 24-hour 'Relay for Life' in Menlo Park
Relay for Life, a 24-hour event to increase cancer awareness while raising funds for the American Cancer Society, will be held from 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, to 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, at Burgess Park in Menlo Park
At the relay, teams of up to 12 people take turns walking or running around a track, relay-style. The event will also include speakers, food, live music, Pilates, yoga and a raffle, according to Menlo Park Relay for Life chair Tess Stern.
At the beginning of the relay on Aug. 28, survivors of cancer will be honored at a 10 a.m. survivors' lap. At 9 p.m. that evening, lost loved ones will be honored in a luminaria ceremony.
Last year the relay raised $42,000 for research and local support services for cancer patients and their families. For more information, call Tess Stern at 678-3847.
Allied Arts presents a Tally Hoedown
Mark Saturday, Sept. 11, on your calendar. That's the date for Tally Hoedown, this year's version of Tally Ho, now returned to September and the Menlo Circus Club, where it was a tradition for many years.
Last year, Tally Ho took place in July in the Allied Arts Guild gardens.
Tally Hoedown, the Allied Arts Guild Auxiliary's annual major fundraiser for the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford, will feature a western motif with equestrian demonstrations, live and silent auctions, a barbecue dinner and dancing. The 6 p.m. party will start with wine tasting and hors d'oeuvres provided by local restaurants. Guests are encouraged to wear western attire.
Tickets for Tally Hoedown are $125 per person. Visit www.alliedartsguild.org for more information.
Allied Arts Guild Auxiliary, formerly known as the Woodside-Atherton Auxiliary to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford, is celebrating its 60th year of raising funds for the hospital. During those years, the facility has changed from a convalescent home, where children could recuperate in the Peninsula's fresh air, to a health center ranked among the top five children's hospitals in the United States by U.S. News and World Report magazine.
