Locals win titles at Pony Club event
The Horse Park in Woodside played host to the U.S. Pony Club's Championships West competition from Aug. 6 to 15, and local youth were among the winners.
While representing the Middle California Region of the U.S. Pony Club, locals won the "Games" competition, a speed and agility event, on Aug. 10. The "Punk Ponies" team members are Claire Kendall, Charlie Campbell, and Megan Luff of Menlo Park; Samara Phillips of Portola Valley; and captain Anna Waldern, of Los Altos Hills, all of whom have been training together for the past 18 months in preparation for this event, said Martha Klinger, district commissioner of the Portola Valley Pony Club.
Their team is now eligible to compete with the top four junior "Games" teams in the country during the 2011 Prince Philip Cup in Kentucky next spring, Ms. Klinger said.
Claire and Anna also came in first during the "Quiz" competition for testing well on various aspects of horse care, including horse nutrition, conformation, and veterinary aid.
Some 250 members of the U.S. Pony Club competed at the Horse Park in such events as show jumping, dressage, games, quiz, polocrosse, and the tetrathlon, a four-part sport made up of a cross-country run, a 200-meter swim, an air-pistol shooting event, and a stadium jumping course event.
National tetrathlon teams from the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland and Australia also participated.
Pony Club members range in age from 4 to 25.
