Around Town: Public invited to candidate forums
The League of Women Voters is inviting the public to several candidate forums over the next week in connection with the Nov. 2 election. Among them:
• Candidates for the Menlo Park City Council will answer questions at a forum from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at the council chambers in the Menlo Park Civic Center. The forum is sponsored by the Menlo Park Chamber of Commerce and the South San Mateo County League of Women Voters.
• Candidates for the District 3 San Mateo County supervisor's seat will participate in a forum from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the Redwood Shores Branch Library, 399 Marine Parkway, Redwood City.
• Candidates for the 21st Congressional District seat will participate in a forum from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto, 505 E. Charleston Road, Palo Alto. Then, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the same location, candidates for the state Assembly 14th District seat will be presented.
World Affairs Council
Professor Abbas Milani, director of Iranian studies at Stanford University, will be the guest speaker at the kickoff event of the Peninsula chapter of the World Affairs Council on Sunday, Sept. 26, at 75 Tuscaloosa Ave in Atherton. Check-in will be at 2:30 p.m. The 3 p.m. program will be followed by a 4:30 p.m. reception.
Professor Milani's topic will be "Iran and its near and far neighbors." An Iranian-American, he is co-director of the Iran Democracy Project at Stanford.

Memory Walk
More than 1,000 people are expected to show up for the third annual Silicon Valley Memory Walk in San Jose on Saturday, Sept. 25, to help the Alzheimer's Association raise money and awareness, according to Peter Daly of Woodside, president of the local chapter's board of directors.
Participants can register as individuals or teams and ask others to join in as walkers and/or sponsors. Check-in is at 8:30 a.m. on Arena Green, at Autumn and Santa Clara streets in San Jose. The walk will start at 10 a.m. and follow a flat route of one or three miles.

Tai Chi at Sequoias
Local residents are invited to attend free tai chi for arthritis classes in Hanson Hall at The Sequoias at 1:15 p.m. each Tuesday, beginning Sept. 28. Donna Marriott, a Foothill College instructor, will lead the 10-week session. The Sequoias is located at 501 Portola Road in Portola Valley. For more information, call 948-1827.
