Vikings football report: Week 5
This report is from Adam Greenlow of Menlo Park, a player on the Junior Midgets Vikings team. He is an eighth-grader at St. Raymond School. All players named are with the Vikings.
The Menlo-Atherton Vikings teams of the Pop Warner football league played their fifth games of the season against the Redwood City 49ers, the Vikings' cross-town rival. The games were played at Menlo-Atherton High School on Oct. 2 and 3. Following are the game summaries:
Mitey Mites (8/9 year-olds): The Mitey Mites had an unfortunate game against a tough opponent. Darnell Ellis had a "monster game" with a 25-yard catch and a 60-yard run. Darian Houston and David Houston delivered big hits to the opposing running backs. Ezra Bazan had two very nice sacks. The final score was Redwood City 24, Vikings 0.
Junior Pee Wees (10/11 year-olds): The JPW had a great game. The Vikings' defense was ferocious throughout the game. Will Beasley had a stellar game pounding the ball up the middle. Keyshawn Ashford scored on a 40-yard run. Kai Winterling had a 35-yard reception for a touchdown. Blake Stenstrom sealed the win after he scored on a 55-yard interception. The Vikings had a nice 18-6 win.
Pee Wees (11/12 year-olds): The Pee Wees triumphed over the visiting 49ers, 12-6. The Vikings' defense played a tremendous first half, keeping the other team from scoring. Charles Ferguson had an excellent game on defense. Joshua Towers and Lavell Gates both had terrific touchdowns after long drives. These drives were made possible by the offensive line consisting of Will Tarr, Leamanaia Brown, Nick Lockareff, Isoa Moimoi, and Kevin Jaggers. At the end of the game, the Vikings' defense kept Redwood City from a last second score, and M-A won the game.
Junior Midgets (12/13 year-olds): The Junior Midgets defeated the 49ers, 33-16. On the first possession, David Teu scored on a 60-yard touchdown. Later, he scored on another long run. Adam Greenlow scored on a 55-yard reverse and a 25-yard reception. On a miss direction play, Manupo Turituri ran untouched for 99-yards and scored. Colin Kloezeman had a crucial sack early in the game. Phil Myers, as center; Maxwell Falore; and Eric Lorenzen had excellent games on the offensive line.
Midgets (13/14 year-olds): The Midgets took the lead early. On the first play of the game, Benjamin Burr-Kirven threw to Matt Odell on a go pattern for a 55-yard pass reception and a score. Later, Andrew Robinson crossed the goal line on a 10-yard catch. Benjamin Burr-Kirven sped through the middle on a 75-yard kickoff return to make the score 24-6. After a 40-yard run by Jayshawn Puckett that ended on the 10-yard line, Matt Odell punched the ball in. Ondre Mitchell had a great game on defense with many pass deflections and hard hits. The final score was 32-6.
