Measures M and U pass; Eshoo, Yee re-elected

Voters passed two San Mateo County measures on Nov. 2 and re-elected U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Menlo Park, and Democratic state Sen. Leland Yee, whose District 8 includes Portola Valley and Woodside.

Fifty-five percent of county voters approved Measure M, which levies a $10 annual vehicle registration fee for 25 years for road, transportation and transit projects. The measure passed 87,551 to 72,641, according to the latest count.

Voters also approved county Measure U, which requires a special election to fill a vacancy on the county Board of Supervisors if that vacancy occurs before Oct. 15 of the third year of the term. The measure also authorizes the county to hold an all-mail election for vacancies in any county elected office, and to commence the process for filling the vacancy on the date a resignation letter is filed.

The latest count shows 92,467 (65.6 percent) voted yes on Measure U, and 48,558 were opposed.

Rep. Eshoo, who has represented the 14th Congressional District since 1993, was elected to her 10th two-year term. The latest count shows she received 115,081 votes (68.8 percent), compared with 47,177 for her Republican opponent Dave Chapman.

State Sen. Yee, D-San Francisco/San Mateo, won re-election to his second term, receiving 78.6 percent of the vote — 160,820, compared to 43,842 for his Republican opponent, Doo Sup Park

According to the latest count, 51.6 percent of registered voters in San Mateo County cast ballots in the Nov. 2 election. About 48 percent of the 178,755 ballots cast were by mail.
