Stargazing Friday in Portola Valley
Another in a series of dark nights with telescopes is coming to the Portola Valley Town Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, when amateur astronomers will gather to share their equipment and knowledge with the public in observing stars, planets, moons and galaxies.
It may be chilly in the dark in open grass between the soccer and the baseball fields beneath coastal hills topped by clouds that generate cold winds, and stargazing involves plenty of standing around, so warm clothing is highly recommended.
Visitors with their own telescopes and questions on how to use them more effectively are encouraged to bring them along. Flashlights are fine if they are kept pointed toward the ground and the lenses are covered with red cellophane, according to a statement from the Nature & Science Committee, which is sponsoring the event.
